We all live within a system. Sometimes, a system provides stability and assurance; other times, it breeds mundanity and repetition. System explores the boundaries of that structure, finding beauty within repetition, resolution from conflict, and acceptance.
Throughout the piece, the bassoon utilizes its rich low register to anchor the piano’s relentless arpeggios, while reaching into its upper register with melodies that harness the instrument's variety in color. Written predominantly in a 5/4 time signature, the piece maintains a deliberate sense of imbalance and unresolved tension. System ultimately culminates in a final recitation of the main theme, ending on a peculiarly high note that delivers finality while leaving a lingering intensity.
