Life Cycle is an exploration of the human journey through the distinct voices of five recorders—performed by a single soloist—and piano accompaniment. The work begins with the sopranino recorder, using its high register to capture the curiosity of infancy, followed by a playful, technical soprano passage representing the energy of childhood. As the piece matures, the alto recorder introduces a confident theme of adulthood, transitioning into a warm, dance-like movement for the tenor that balances seasoned experience with a lingering youthful spark. The journey concludes with the bass recorder representing the elderly years; it opens with a soulful, unaccompanied solo that reflects a lifetime of wisdom. In a final gesture, the work returns to the original sopranino melody, suggesting that in both our first and final chapters, we return to the most basic and profound themes of existence. |
